Geology 9/12/08 Galveston and Ike- Residents living in single family homes in some parts of coastal Texas face “certain death” if they do not heed orders to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Ike’s arrival, the National Weather Service said Thursday night. -First exam is 2 weeks from today 9/26/08 -Fetch-when wind blows over large portion of water -Barrier islands=sandbars, dangerous for people to live there but yet people still do -The 1900 Galveston hurricane was the worst natural disaster in US history. Sept 8, 1900. 6000 deaths in Galveston and 6000 deaths in adjacent areas in Texas. -Most Atlantic hurricanes develop from mid- August to mid-October. Minerals -Exposure to mineral dust can lead to serious lung diseases. -Asbestos cause’s cancer and lung disease. -Exposure to high level of silica or quartz dust is not good. -Two classes of respiratory disease are caused by mineral dusts *Fibrogenic diseases (emphysema like) Silicosis-quartz Black lung-coal dust Asbestosis-asbestos minerals *Malignant neoplasm’s Mesothieloma-crocidolite Asbestos and erionite (a fibrous zeolite)
