Geology 9/17 Understand statements at the top of the power point slides for exam -Igneous rocks are formed from melts from the earth’s mantle. *Lava= melt at the surface *Magma=melt in the subsurface -Igneous rocks are part of the rock cycle. *Igneous rocks-come from melts * Sedimentary rocks *Metamorphic- When sedimentary and igneous rocks are underground and crystallize but do not melt -Igneous rocks are classified based on their mineralogy, which reflects their chemical composition, and texture *Felsic-granite and rhyolite. Silica rich, sodium and potassium content. *Intermediate- diorite and andesite *Mafic- Gabbro and Basalt *Ultramafic- peridotite -Mafic rocks are dark colored -Felsic rocks are light colored -Igneous rock texture is controlled by cooling rate -Igneous rock types are linked to the tectonic setting *Continental Craton-Felsic below, mafic above *Ocean basin- Mafic, a lot of basalt.
