Geology 9/19/08 -Tambora eruption of 1815 led to the “year without a summer” (1816) *Volcano in Indonesia *Tambora is one of a series of dangerous andesite volcanoes along a subduction zone *Largest and deadliest volcano in recorded history -That subduction zone also produces very large earthquakes *The resulting tsunami killed more than 225,000 people -This eruption ejected more than 150 million tons of dust into the atmosphere *The dust reflected sunlight back into space and cooled the earth -June snow, cold nights in both July and August widespread frost around New England on the 8 th -9 th July and damaging frosts on the 22 nd of August from interior New England south into N.C. led to crop failures and food shortages. -In July 1816 “incessant rainfall” during that “wet, ungenial summer” forced Mary Shelley, John William Polidori and their friends to stay indoors for much of their Swiss holiday. *They decided to have a contest seeing who could write the scariest
