Unformatted text preview: Hebrew Bible and History of Judaism Cont'd How do we know anything about Jewish history/Jewish faith: Major source: THE H EBREW B IBLE → The Hebrew Bible established pattern of Jewish festivals, ritual events, etc; → contains psalms that form the prayers/liturgy of Jewish tradition. Also contains primary record of Jewish history: holds that Bible was written by Moses (not in any way historically verifiable though - this is the traditional judaism view ). We know that the books were likely transmitted orally before they were written down -that we know for sure ( this is the liberal judaism view ) → provides major source of hisotrical knowledge, but written of perspective of people who consider themselves to be chosen people of God/"priests" of God → earliest known reference to Israelites by other people: by Egyptians ~1230bce on Egyptian stella ('israel is laid to waste' - triumph of pharaoh over israelites - word used for israel was not as of country with defined borders but of migratory people (this is time of book of Judges) - still recognized as distinct...
