P HARISESS - most popular sect - middle class of society - landowners, skilled workers, teachers, Scribes ('pious ones') for Sadduccees, Rabbis - synagogues - main centre, but from time to time achieved power in the temple; most of the time in synagogues talking about details of scripture although do have power - resist foreign influence for most part → Trying to interpret scriptures broadly: -regarded themselves as true custodians of the law and saducees being just cultural custodians - villified in Christian scriptures (but of course thats just a representation) - b/c more focused on forms of ritual as opposed to inner riteousness - immersed in studies of scripture; written law but also Oral law (teachings); unlike Saduccees, want to interpret scripture more broadly; from the pharisees point of view, they were trying to make the scriptures more humane and livable: their goal was to establish principles for scriptural interpretation (these would be eventually developed in rabbinic period by 200ce or so) -
