3 major sects: 1. R EFORM J UDAISM - - evolved so jews wouldnt go christian →associated with A BRAM G EIGER - lived in 19th century; He: -introduced reform Judaism with emphasis on ethics -argued that Judaism needs to allow for evolution in doctrine - ie practice doesn't need to rest on revealed doctrine- ie just as animal sacrifice used to be very important but died out, in the same way a lot of practices could also go - such as: - segregation of men and women from american reform rabbi meeting of 1885 - no dietary, clothing, and priestly purity laws - Messiah is not expected or desired- Jews should revere no homeland other than one to which they belong by birth + citizenship - b/c we're no longer nation but spiritual community -switched from vernacular /Hebrew to German language - made various innovations in synagogue service (including bringing in Chirstian practices - use of organ, choir), - eventaually also ordination of female rabbis, acceptance of gay marriage came about -reform view is that we didnt need the Talmud
