OBJECTIVE The objective of this experiment is to study loss of energy of fluids do to frictional resistance that occurs when it flows through a pipe. In another part of the experiment the Venturi meter will be used to examine how the increase of velocity and decrease of pressure is related to the cross sectional area of the pipe. INTRODUCTION In the first part of the experiment we will be analysing how a flow goes from laminar to turbulent. This change is related to the critical value of Re (Reynolds number). Its important to study the flow of fluids through pipes so that we can better understand what factors come in to play (friction, velocity, pipe area, etc). In the second part of this experiment we will be using the Venturi meter to show how important the cross sectional area of the pipe when examinining the increase and decrease of velocity, flow rate, and pressure. MATERIALS -Apparatus for measuring friction loss along a pipe-Volumetric hydraulic bench-Venturi meter-StopwatchPROCEDURE Part A Low flow (water manometer) 1.Open needle valve to obtain a differential height of at least 400 mm 2.Record height readings of downstream and upstream tubes ( h1 and h2) 3.Record flow rate 4.Repeat for two higher flow rates High flow (Digital manometer) 1.Open needle head to obtain a differential head of at least 400 mm
