Above ground, gaps receive more light and wind, more soil moisture, and the temperatures are often more extremes. Gaps follow a diurnal cycle where the gap is hotter during the day and cooler at night than the surrounding forest. Below the ground, gap has relatively high moisture, humidity, soil moisture. Above the ground in the forest, there is high temperature during the day in the environment, high wind blowing, high light intensity from the sun, and air could be cooler through the shades of trees. Below the ground in the forest, there could be high soil moisture due to fact that it has huge root system that sucks up water and allows it to move through the roots from wet places to dryer areas of soil. b. By having different amounts of trees and plants, root system can alter soil moisture in the forest. Below ground, gaps differ from intact forest in that they
