Pinal Patel BIOL 1108L Take home question’s answer Mikis Bastian, Richard G. Pearson, and Luz Boyero were comparing the effects of diversity loss on ecosystem from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems. It was based on detritus tropical food web, where loose material resulting from disintegration. There were numerous researches performed on ecosystem function; however, all they have resulted in different conclusions. One example of detritus-based system is headwater streams, where leaf falls from surrounding forest into the lake, which is the main food source of shredders. Authors’ aim was to test the consequences of reducing leaf diversity (LD) on leaf breakdown rates and their process behind these effects. They were testing for two hypotheses with two possible outcomes of each hypothesis. First hypothesis was in single-species shredder to test the loss of leaf diversity (LD) decreases leaf breakdown rates if the most favored species is lost; if most favored species is left, LD raises the leaf breakdown rates. Second hypothesis was that low LD supports interfaces between shredder species, which makes leaf breakdown rates in multi-species lower, if
