Pinal Patel Signe O. Wegener ENGL 1102M Journal and “Everyday Use” Text assignment 1. Where is “Everyday Use” set? The setting of the story takes place in the yard. 2. What is the point-of-view of the story? The story is told in first person point-of-view. A mother tells the story herself, talks about her two daughters and her experiences. 3. Who are the main characters? What do you know about each of them? (Use examples from the text here.) Which character(s) do you sympathize with? Why? Main characters are a mother, her daughters, Dee and Maggie, Hakim-a-barber. Mother is the narrator of the story, a “big-boned woman with rough, man-working hands”,who cares about her both daughters, and in the end, she gives quilts from Dee to Maggie. Dee is the oldest daughter, who changes her name to Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo. She always wanted nice. Maggie is younger sister of Dee, shy girl. She was burned severely in a house fire when she was a child. Her mother expresses her, “she has been like this, chin on chest, eyes on
