Business Communication Trends Business Communication Trends On September 5 th , a newly hired maintenance technician, John Kimble, did not go to work. He called sick by leaving a message for the supervisor at the corporate office; however, he did not notify his local property manager. The property manager, who was returning from a long medical leave, pressed charges against the maintenance technician for some items missing from a vacant unit that he had been working on. The property manager never attempted to contact the maintenance technician or her supervisor to find out why the maintenance technician was not at work that day. On the same day, the property manager was instructed by her supervisor (through an e- mail) to withdraw the police report as after a phone conversation with the supervisor, she was brought up to speed on the maintenance technician’s situation. She did not do it; further, she showed to work late the following day at approximately around 2.30 p.m. The Police Department arrested the maintenance technician prior to property manager’s arrival at the office. The property manager did not notify her supervisor about being late to work so supervisor could not take any actions to stop the arrest. That behavior represented not only a violation of the company policy but it also caused the arrest of an innocent man. Indeed, it took several hours of the regional property supervisor and the assistant director to have the maintenance technician released. The above illustrative incident is an example of how ineffective business communication can lead to tremendous waste of time and build a negative image of an organization.
