What are three examples of bias in business writing? Identify two methods you consider important to use in reducing bias in business writing. Bias language is a language that discriminates against people on the basis of race, sex, religion, age, physical condition, or any other category. For instance, a business letter that starts saying gentlemen is certainly a sexist language as it does not treat both sexes neutrally. Another example is business writing that refers to a group (e.g. African Americans) by using a term that the group does not prefer (e.g. Black). A third example is business writing that refers to people with disabilities and/or diseases by using people first language directs to identify the person with his or her condition such the mentally retarded (Locker & Kienzler, 2008). Bias in business may also include the use of rhetorical devices. Rhetoric is the use of any possible means of persuasion. This is particularly visible in marketing and advertising.
