Design Argument We can infer god’s existence from the nature of the world around us Watchmaker analogy: Paley introduced watchmaker analogy , and with this we can conclude that everything is made by a designer and each part is framed and put together to serve a purpose 1. watches have parts that work together to serve a purpose 2. so every watch was made by an intelligent designer 3. universe has parts that work together to serve a purpose 4. likewise, then, universe was made by an intelligent designer -concludes that God (all knowing/powerful and perfectly good) made everything – best explanation argument HUME objected: 1. lack relevant background knowledge of universes- have no knowledge of universes being created in the past so how can we compare our universe to anything else 2. inept god? Malicious? Apprentice god? Team of gods? – why is it this one, perfectly good, etc. god, why couldn’t it have been someone else/ other people?
