2/10/2011 2 Therefore, understanding (and predicting) how atmospheric CO 2 levels (and climate) may change in the future, means we need to understand where carbon is stored and how it moves around. 7 Carbon Cycle 8 5 significant pools in the carbon cycle 1. Atmosphere (785 Gt in 2008 or ~385 ppm) 2. Forests/Soils (610 Gt/1580 Gt) 3. Surface ocean (1,020 Gt) 4. Deep ocean (38, 100 Gt) 5. Fossil Fuel (5,000 Gt) The pools are not as important as the fluxes! Carbon Fluxes Photosynthesis/respiration Changing land use, e.g. Deforestation, forest regrowth Surface ocean flux Flux to the deep ocean Fossil fuel 10 Atmospheric CO 2 at Mauna Loa (ppm) 11 As of September 2009, atmospheric CO 2 was 385 ppm 12 GT.y -1 Carbon flux (Gt.y -1 )
