Jan 27 th Nematodes- nervous systems, move to find food and niche, phylum is 400 Mya with conserved body plan. Parasitism as life-style arose many times in evolution. STH- soil transmited helminths with direct life-cyle (no vector) called gastrointestinal. Tissue nematodes can live in lungs, blood, lymph, skin, mucle can be vector or direct parasites. Larval nematodes – accidental infection through infecting the wrong host. All of the above are rarely lethal but deleterious. Water resources are a major limit to economic development in many less-developed countries. Water for drinking, cooking and washing comes from wells or surface water (accessible). Sewage systems are costly; can technology provide a solution? Anisakis comlex: in fish, larvae move into the muscle and can end up in sushi. Larvae leave the human gut, leaving a hole where bacteria can grow in paratenile cavity (outside GI tract). Not very common because immune system will kill them, but not for immunocompromised individuals. Approximately, 40% fish in Pacific US markets infected.
