Feb 3 rd Cryptosporidium spp. Are parasites oocysts shed into the environment. Infective spore lives in  between host phospholipid bylayers of the cell membranes. It’s feeder organelles digests cell  cytoplasm. Oocysts open (dissolve) in the gut. Observed as early as 1907, but was not  recognized as a human parasite resulting in diarrhea until 1976. Also an opportunistic parasite  resulting in death in AIDS patients – not only invaded gut but disseminated into other regions of  the body. Very common in animals. Infect many species including snakes, birds, human and cattle.  Majority of human infections due to C. hominis (human-specific). Other human infections due to  C. parvum. Infectious dose is 10-30 oocysts can spread via person-person or person-animal  contact, contaminated water. Transmission is by fecal-oral route of the oocysts.
