Feb 8 th Entamoeba histolytica: patient suffers from chronic dysentery (diarrhea with blood). This is the  3 rd  most common cause of parasitic death (100,000 deaths/year) though it is treatable –  therefore associated with countries lacking proper health care. It is waterborne. Problem: it is a  microscopic infection and there are 6 different infectious species (difficult to identify). Infection: hatches in gut after ingestion, amoeba kill and eat cells, direct life-cycle with no  intermediate host. Only 1 oocyst required to successfully infect host. Classically, takes 2-4  weeks of infection – making exposure difficult to isolate in epidemiology. Resistant to chlorine.  Can be removed by flocculation to trap and isolate oocysts by physical properties. 10-20% are  symptomatic infections, of which fewer die. Treatment eliminates mortality, but not morbidity.
