Math 2303 Linear Algebra Section 2.4 Matrix Operations Recall that a matrix is a two-dimensional array of numbers. The size of a matrix is the number of rows and the number of columns. Matrix A is 2x3 means that it has 2 rows and 3 columns. Recall that two matrices may be added if and ONLY IF they are the same same. To add two matrices of the same size, simply add corresponding components. A matrix may be multiplied by a scalar by multiplying each entry in the matrix by the scalar. Matrix Times a Vector - (from Section 2.1) 11 12 13 1 11 1 12 2 13 3 11 12 13 21 22 23 2 21 1 22 2 23 3 1 21 2 22 3 23 31 32 33 3 31 1 32 2 33 3 31 32 1 2 3 aaa b a b a b a b r o w b a a a A b a b a b a b r o w bb a b a b a b a b a b a b r o w b a a a ++ ⎛⎞ ⎜⎟ == + + = = + ⎝⎠ 33 + B Notice that Ab is a linear combinations of the columns of the matrix A.
