Asian American Studies 172C January 6, 2010 Transnational Bollywood- Lecture 1 What do we think of when we think of Bollywood films? o Showing the “best parts” of Indian culture o Spectacle o A sense of impossibility o Song/dance o Poorly choreographed action scenes o Familial element o Close minded portrayal of foreigners (esp. older films) o Nostalgia/moral universe o Elaborate costumes o Pleasure Criticism does not preclude pleasure when viewing media Objectives o Understand goal of transnationalism in the formation of cinema o To engage Bollywood cinema as a critical lenses to understand community and identity formation in S Asian o To trace the role of Bollywood in the negotiation and formulation in discourses of gender, identity etc. o Develop critical skills (aesthetic techniques, modes of address, the way in which we are positioned as spectators) o Create a framework that allows us to compare the identity of transnational communities (UK, US, etc)
