Lecture 5, 01-18 I. What women want more -- Med student survey A. 80% med student women say spouse needs male partner with higher or equal income B. 40% male med student want spouse with lower income. 30% indifferent. C. 95% women prefer spouse with equal or higher. 60% men prefer spouse with lower D. General point: Women’s preferences, even if they are higher earners, are men with higher or equal income E. Characteristics that are important 1. Men don’t care about spouses earning power. Women do care. 2. Physical attractiveness important. a) very important -- men 65% b) unimportant -- women 50% (?) 3. Men stress physical attractiveness in choosing a partner. Women stress status and income. F. Men say as my status increases my dating pool increases. Women say that as their status increases, their pool decreases. Back to What’s Newsworthy I. Social significance -- or -- deviance. What’s more newsworthy? -- Deviance A. ex. Sports analogy: LeBron James 1. Left the Cavalier for the Heat. 2. Made “The Decision” one-hour ESPN special, which would raise $ for Boys and Girls club. 3. So he changes teams and does so to raise money for charity. But we don’t care, we think he’s a cheater because he leaves his home-team to join up with other super stars (the competition). He broke the norm of competing against other superstars -- what’s fair a) Deviance outweighed social significance, making it a newsworthy event 4. All he did was change teams, though 5. LeBron feels bad and makes Nike “Rise” commercial 6. Cleveland’s response to the commercial -- they’re mad. B. Why do these athletes care about their reputations when they’ve got money,
