Vigil July 18, 2011 Art 101 Vocabulary Architecture Define the following terms and give an example of a building that utilizes each architectural term, including location and time period it was constructed. 1) Post and Lintel : In architecture, a structural system based on two or more upright (posts) supporting a horizontal crosspiece (lintel or beam). a Example: Kallikrates. Temple of Athena Nike . Acropolis, Athens. c. 427-424. Page 284 2) Dome : In architecture, a convex, evenly curved roof; technically, an arch rotated 360 degrees on its vertical axis. Like an arch, a dome may be hemispherical or pointed. a Example: Isidoros and Athensios. Hagia Sophia . Istanbul, Turkey. c. 352- 537. Page 292 3) Round Arch : In architecture, a curved structure, usually made of wedge shaped stones, which serve to span an opening. An arch may be semicircular or rise to a point at the top. a Example: Interior. Sainte-Foy . Conques, France. c. 1050-1120. Page 287 4) Dry Masonry : a building method by which structures are constructed from stones without any mortar to bind them together.
