procedure in the lab manual. Unfortunately, a crucial mistake was made when 3.0 M HCl was added to the complex solution instead of the concentrated 12.0 M HCl. Because the 3.0 M HCl was too diluted, crystallization of Complex A did not occur. Hence, the purification process was a failure. In the second part of the experiment, 5 unknown cobalt complexes had to be identified by measuring their maximum absorbance wavelength using the Ocean Optics spectrometer.
