The Spectrochemical series Results and Discussion: The purpose of this experiment was into divided into two parts. In part one, a cobalt complex was synthesized (complex A for my group) following the instructions in the lab manual. This part of the experiment was successfully carried out and the product was stored in the lab for one week. In the second week, complex A was purified using the

procedure in the lab manual. Unfortunately, a crucial mistake was made when 3.0 M HCl was added to the complex solution instead of the concentrated 12.0 M HCl. Because the 3.0 M HCl was too diluted, crystallization of Complex A did not occur. Hence, the purification process was a failure. In the second part of the experiment, 5 unknown cobalt complexes had to be identified by measuring their maximum absorbance wavelength using the Ocean Optics spectrometer. Since my group failed to purify cobalt complex A, we used another group’s complex A to measure the wavelength. The following table gives the wavelengths of all

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
