Module 28: Forgetting, Memory Construction and Memory Improvement 1. Forgetting a. Encoding Failure - We cannot remember what we have not encoded. The older an individual is the more difficult it becomes to encode new information. This is because the areas in the brain responsible for encoding new information are less responsive in older adults. Commonplace scenarios and objects are rarely committed to long term memory. b. Storage Decay - The phenomenon of losing committed memory. The course of forgetting is initially rapid and then levels off over time. The memories also fade because of the accumulation of other learning that disrupts our retrieval. c. Retrieval Failure - Sometimes encoded memories are inaccessible. Attributes to adults occasional memory failure. d. Interference- Learning some items may interfere with retrieving others. Proactive interference- occurs when something one learned earlier. Disrupts one’s recall of something you experience later.
