Term Definition Function Physical Layer The lowest layer of the OSI model is the physical layer and is involved with the transmission and reception of the unstructured raw bit stream over a physical medium, describing the electrical/optical, mechanical, and functional interfaces to the physical medium. It also carries the signals for all of the higher layers. Its potential functions are data encoding, physical medium attachment, transmission technique, and physical medium transmission. Data Link Layer The data link layer provides error-free transfer of data frames from one node to another over the physical layer, allowing layers above it to assume virtually error-free transmission over the link. Its basic functions are link establishment and termination, frame traffic control, frame sequencing, frame acknowledgement, frame delimiting, frame error checking, and media access management. Network Layer The network layer controls the operation of the subnet and decides which physical path the

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
