Pat is the network engineer for the Acme Corporation, a nationwide bank. He needs to design a wide area network (WAN) that will connect offices in Dallas, San Francisco, Denver, and Tallahassee. The WAN that Pat designs should provide redundancy to ensure that if a link malfunctions, the critical account data will not be lost. Which WAN topology should Pat design for Acme Corporation? The WAN topology that Pat should design for Acme Corporation should be a Star topology because each network device connects to a central point using a hub or switch acting as a multipoint connector. They may take some time to install because every computer needs a cable to connect to the central point, but this allows the other workstations to remain connected if there is a link malfunction or failure. Because of this and its ease of maintenance, Star topologies are the most popular to use. However, bottlenecks may occur when using a hub with this topology, as all data must pass through the hub.
