Since the beginning of time, music has been used to tell and enhance stories, bring people closer together in celebration and in mourning, and inspire creativity, all while influencing cultures and creating controversy. In every known culture, music can be found, past and present, wildly varying between times and places. As early as 50,000 years ago, the first modern humans began to disperse from Africa and set foot on all the other habitable continents. Since every person in just about every population of the world, including the most isolated tribal groups, have at least some form of music, scientists conclude that music is most likely to have been present in the ancestral population before the dispersal of humans around the world. Along this scientific conclusion is the theory that music may have been invented in Africa some 50,000 years ago, evolving to become a fundamental constituent of human life. Depending on the region and period, the emotions that music expresses, and situations in which music is played and listened to, vary greatly in the attitudes toward players and composers. In today’s society, there is a great variety of music genres, further creating controversy among the different societies. For instance, my selected genre of music, rock and roll, has been widely criticized and even banned in some societies. With multiple stylistic origins and influences deriving from, blues, gospel, folk, country, swing, and R&B, just to name a few, rock and roll has a wide variety of sounds and style. Rock and roll originated and evolved in the United States during the 1940’s, and by the 1950’s, became one of the best selling genres of music, and establishing its rock hard foundation in the societies, communities, and homes of American youth....
