From the retailers perspective the demand is not very different from week to week. Often time the retailer becomes scared of a shortage and over orders and the demand curve goes out of proportion. (Bullwhip effect: the little change in demand creates a dramatic change in demand.) Better communication helps firms focus on end user demand. Supply chain management has to consider facilities, inventory, transportation, and Information. A firm needs a way to check and update inventory. Benefits of SCM: Faster replenishment Reduced Cost More accurate order processing Strategic relationships with suppliers Greater agility and responsiveness Chapter 9 (Class) Intelligent systems: Software that searches vast amounts of data to derive information. Reporting Data mining Knowledge Management Reporting Tools is the low end of business intelligence system. We process data by filtering, sorting, grouping, simple calculation. On-Line analytical Processing (OLAP) online is the most important fact here. The user should be able to say how he would like to see his data. Slice and Dice says that rather than looking at these categories in more detail I am going to replace the information in general. (OLAP example is an example of Slice and dice). Different types of data include: Large Database, Subject-oriented, integrated, time- variant, Nonvolatile, and line-Friendly interface. A time variant gives a record of when the data was recorded.
