Metabolism- production and use of energy. O2 consumption, calories burned, heat Why be Warm? Physical Chemistry- molecules move more rapidly when they are warm. Increases rate of reactions Biological- Operate independent of the environment. Colonize cold parts of the world Evolutionary- species to survive during major global cooling periods Birds and mammals have warm bodies How important is it to stay warm for humans? Average temperature for body is 98.6 degrees F 86 degrees F- loss of muscle coordination, eyes fixed, heart irregular 77 degrees F- cardiac arrhythmia, death In water 55 degrees, hypothermia can occur in as little as 20-30 minutes 107 degree fever causes death Poikilotherms- body temperature varies with environmental temperature. Cold blooded. Lack internal temperature control Ways to regulate heat Increase activity – increase metabolism= increase heat. Fish generally are poikilothemic except for tuna and sharks Behavioral thermoregulation- sun to warm up, shade to cool down

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
