Social Stratification has/does/will always be present in all societies Ex. Communes- group trying to make a society without distinctions or classes, popular with old Soviet Union All groups has a hierarchy of who is in charge Horizontal differentiation is age, race, and eye color= vertical differentiation is social stratification Why study social stratification? It is an important independent variable Ex. Social class, position, attitudes and behaviors According to Sewell’s study of 9000 Wisconsin High School seniors, the higher the social class are 4X likely to graduate college and nine times more likely to receive some college or professional training, compared to the lowest socioeconomic class of seniors According to Wilfang and Scarbecz, lower- class children are likely to have lower self- esteem than middle and upper- class children.
