Insect As Pests In Homes B Insect “Guests” That Enjoy “All the Comforts of Home” V Ants Ants are social insects that live in a colony An ant colony typically consists of a queen, males, and a large number of sterile workers It is usually the wingless workers that we see in our houses Most ants nest in the ground, so ants in a house are often entering from outside But nests may be in wall voids V Can Ants Sting? More primitive species can sting Ex: Red imported fire ant stings cause a burning sensation and the formation of a localized pustule More advanced forms lost sting, replaced with an acid-squirting system Ex: Carpenter ant formic acid Many ants also bite Imported Fire Ant H
