Art History: Renaissance Architecture , Early Brunelleschi Dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, Brunelleschi, Florence, Italy, 1418 Key principle monument of Florence cityscape Cathedral has had a long history of re-construction, dating back to 13 th century Size of apse / transept is extraordinarily large and so the dome is of great proportions At this time in Italy, no one knew how to build a dome of this size so a contest was held and Brunelleschi won (over Ghiberti who had defeated Brunelleschi in an earlier competition) Brunelleschi came up with the solution to the problem of the dome / cupola: re- construct the framework of the dome so there is no shuttering: o Framework: 8 rising ribs from corners of an octagonal structure of the drum, 16 minor ribs between them, creating a skeletal like structure o 8 horizontal arches were used so the dome did not fall into itself. Brunelleschi’s solution was dynamic and innovative at the time / used double- shells with progressive and lighter materials for the flesh of the dome (reduced timbering) o Herring-bone pattern that was self-supporting by linking each stone below and next to it / ribs and shells sewn together o Decorative elements included thick buttresses and volutes and pilasters
