Page 1 of 3 Stephanus Oscar English 123 Mr. Leong Essay 1 Searching for A Better Future Pat Mora is a Mexican-American poetry writer who has accomplished many awards for her short stories and poets. She integrates her own life experiences into her writings. She feels that the life of the Mexican people changes when coming to America ‘Immigrants’ tells us a story about a family who migrates to the United States to strive for a brighter future for their children. The parents make every effort for their children to be accepted into their new country. The parents change their lifestyle completely to fit their children into the society. Pat Mora, in her poem “Immigrants”, shows that when one comes to a new country, they should not have to leave their identity behind, otherwise they continue to struggle to adapt while find a new identity. In this poem, Pat Mora tries to bring the issue of acculturation versus assimilation. It is evident that the family in the poem tries to Americanize their children. They “wrap their babies in the American flag” and “feed them mashed hot dogs and apple pie”. Clearly, by wrapping their babies with American flag they are trying to show their “patriotism” towards America in which they do not have it. How can a person who has just migrated from one country to another, be very patriotic to his or her new country? In
