Running head: BEHAVIOR ANALYTIC ARTICLES 1Identifying Behavior Analytic Research ArticlesKelsey CathcartCapella University
BEHAVIOR ANALYTIC ARTICLES2IntroductionA research article would be considered behavior analytic when it is focused on a socially significant behavior in need of intervention, and includes (or attempts to include) the seven dimensions of applied behavior analysis (ABA) as recommended by Baer et al. (1968). For this assignment, I have read and analyzed two articles: “Using Token Reinforcement to Increase Walking for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities” and “The Relationship Between Intentional Self-Injurious Behavior and the Loudness Dependence of Auditory Evoked Potential in ResearchVolunteers” (Krentz et al., 2016; Marsic et al., 2015). After examining both articles, I concluded that one of them is behavior analytic, while the other is not. I will attempt to explain my decisionin the following paragraphs. Behavior Analytic ArticleThe article “Using Token Reinforcement to Increase Walking for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities” would be considered behavior analytic (Krentz et al., 2016). To begin with, it addresses physical inactivity in adults with disabilities, which has proven to be detrimental to their health. This would fulfill the appliedcriterion, as physical activity is a socially significant component in a person’s life. By improving the participants’ behaviorof self-care (another dimension of ABA), there would also be an improvement in their physical health and day-to-day life. The article describes several studies that use token reinforcement to increase physical activities with this specific population. While this intervention did, in fact, result in an increase in
