EGN 3353C Fluid Mechanics Lou Cattafesta MAE Dept. University of Florida Lecture 10 Flow Visualization ± -see film on CD included with your text ± see link to eFluids.com on the course web site ± Some Definitions 1. Timeline a line of adjacent fluid particles in a flow field marked at an instant in time o example laser line pulse or hydrogen bubble technique in water 2. Pathline a path/trajectory of a fluid particle during a time interval o example timed exposure of seed particles (flakes, bubbles) that follow fluid particles 3. Streakline locus of fluid particles that have passed through the same point in a flow o example video of continuous dye or smoke injection in a flow at a point 4. Streamline line that, at a given instant, is tangent everywhere to the local velocity vector o mathematical description (given below) o streamtube is a bundle of streamlines (flow cannot cross a streamtube) NOTE : In a steady flow, all of the above are identical. This is not true in unsteady flow.
