Homework 2 due Wednesday, September 1 1. A plane wall of thickness 2L = 40 mm and thermal conductivity k = 5 W/m-K experiences uniform volumetric heat generation q(dot), while convection heat transfer occurs at both of its surfaces, each of which is exposed to a fluid of temperature T = 20 o C. Under steady- state conditions, the temperature distribution in the wall is T(x) = 80 - 200x - 1.5 X 10 4 x 2 ( x is in meters). The origin of the x -coordinate is at the midplane of the wall. The density and specific heat of the wall are 2600 kg/m 3 and 800 J/kg-K respectively. a) Graph the temperature distribution in the wall. Identify significant physical features. (5 pts) b) What is the volumetric rate of heat generation? (5 pts) c) What are the heat fluxes at the two surfaces? How are they related to the heat generation rate? (5 pts) d) What are convection coefficients at the surfaces? (2 pts) e) Obtain an expression for the heat flux distribution. Explain any significant features of the distribution.(3 pts)
