Unformatted text preview: The three basic arguments were that the penitentiary life would be too hard on the youth, they could learn bad habits for the older inmates, and they could be raped or emotional abused. They thought that the juveniles would get schooled on how to get away with crimes or that they would become institutionize. The purpose of the labor inside prison was to help out the growing companies. (www.urban.org) The companies would make a lot of money and then pay the inmates less that they should. It was also to cut down the crimes inside the prison and give the inmates something to take up their time. The cause of the decline of prison labor is when the Great Depression hit they took the jobs from the inmates and gave them to the men that were looking for work.
