Page 1 Dipa Patel English 102 Barbara Hildner July 25, 2011 Blacks are the murderers, the rapists, the gang-bangers, where every- thing that is negative in the society, why do I have to go to school and be Jim too? Because whenever I read about the slave who is gullible and stupid, that becomes a reflection of me, too.   The story of Huckleberry Finn , if originally written by Mark Twain, However, we still question ourselves, does it end with the death of its author. The twentieth century novel has become famous not merely as the crown jewel in the work of one of America’s outstanding writers, but also as a subject of intense controversy. The novel is occasionally been banned in Southern states because of its consistently critical take on the South and the hypocrisies of slavery. Others have dismissed Huckleberry Finn as vulgar or racist because it uses the word nigger, a term whose connotations obscure the novel’s deeper themes which are undeniably anti-slavery and even prevent some from reading and enjoying it altogether. The fact that the historical context in which twain wrote and choose his word insignificant and, indeed, part of the realism he wanted to create and offer a little solace to some modern readers. Ultimately , The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has proved significant not only as a novel that explores the racial and moral world of its time but also, through the controversies that continue to surround it, as an piece of
