Joanna Aeschbacker Unit 3 Sarah, Makoto and the Laptop In this Unit’s assignment, we are discussing the different scenarios that involve Sarah, Makoto, and a laptop. Each scenario is slightly different, but all involve Sarah taking Makoto’s laptop without Makoto’ consent. And although each scenario has a similar foundation, each scenario actually represents a different criminal charge. Scenario 1: While passing Makoto’s house one night, Sarah sees a laptop computer left unattended on Makoto’s porch. Sarah takes the computer, carries it home, and tells everyone she owns it. In Scenario 1, Sarah has taken and carried away property that does not belong to her and is representing it as her own. Sarah would be charged simply with the property crime of Theft. A property crime is a crime from which its offender seeks an economic gain or seeks to damage property. Theft, or Larceny, is defined as “the crime of unlawful taking and carrying away of someone else’s property with the intent to permanently deprive the owner of possession” (Miller
