***Dogon, Republic of Mali. Marcel Griaule, the French ethnographer who led the Mission Dakar-Djibouti in 1930-31. His aggressive style of fieldwork has been much criticized, although the Dogon appreciated him. They asked for his body when he died, and when they didn’t receive it they made a wooden image of him that they buried in the cliffs.
