Lane South-Western Cengage Learning, 2008 Daft Management Book Summary Chapter 1 Management is the attainment of organizational goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, organizing, leading, and controlling organizational resources. 4 management functions : Planning - identifying goals for future organizational performance and deciding on the tasks and use of resources needed to attain them. Defines where the organization wants to be in the future and how to get there. Example in the book is that the marketing chiefs of the various divisions from Time Warner, Inc.- HBO, Turner Broadcasting, Warner Bros, etc.- meet every 3 weeks to talk about future projects and how the divisions can work together to make each other more successful. Organizing - assigning tasks, grouping tasks into departments, delegating authority, and allocating resources across the organization. Typically follows planning and reflects how the organization tries to accomplish the plan. Leading - use of influence to motivate employees to achieve organizational goals. Leading means creating a shared culture and values, communicating goals to employees throughout the organization, and infusing employees with the desire to perform at a high level. Involves motivating entire departments and divisions as well as those individuals working immediately with the manager. Controlling - Monitoring employees' activities, determining whether the organization is on target toward its goals.
