Creation of Action Potentials • Resting potential created by: – Na/K pump & ungated K + ion channels • Stimulus creates upset in resting potential – Voltage gated Na + channels open, Na + ions diffuse in –Na + ion diffusion causes more channels to open – Depolarization of membrane approaches threshold – Threshold Action potential – Takes time for Na + channels to assume their resting gate position Refractory period (1-2msec before another AP can fire)

• Return to resting potential – Close voltage gated Na + channels + – Open voltage gated K channels (slow to open & close) + – Undershoot resting potential: hyperpolarization (due to slow closing K gates) – Return to resting potential (voltage gated K+ channels now closed)
