Unformatted text preview: Department of Homeland Security Paper Department of Homeland Security September 5, 2010 I nt roduction On November 25, 2002 Congress signed into law the Homeland Security Act of 2002. This was the establishment of The United States Department of Homeland Security DHS-. The new law launched a complete overhaul of many government agencies and created the Department of Homeland Security Paper third largest executive department cabinet. The DHSs primary responsibility is to defend The United States of America U.S. against terrorist attacks, and help American citizens with a plan of action in the event of a natural disaster, or a catastrophic accident. Homeland security is necessary to protect the American way of life (DHS, 2008, p. 27). Homeland security is defined by the DHS as a, concerted national effort to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reduce Americas vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage and recover from attacks that do occur (Homeland Security Council, 2007, p. 3). Homeland Security Before 9/11, 2001 On September 11, 2001 -9/11- 19 terrorists hijacked 4 planes leaving American airports and subsequently flew two into the World Trade Center WTC-, and one into the Pentagon. The fourth crashed a few miles north of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The attacks resulted in the deaths of 2,973 American citizens. An act of terrorism on such a large scale was an example of how insecure The United States of America U.S. - really was against a domestic act of terrorism. Within a month of the 9/11 attacks a series of bioterrorism attacks occurred. Letters filled with anthrax were sent through the United States Postal Service to several people in the U.S. Robert Stevens, an employee of American Media International AMI- was the first victim of the attacks with a second AMI employee dying several days later (Combs Oops. I think, no caps yet, as a specific department is not created. But you may be right. Just think about it. Remember page or para number for quote. & , 2010). Letters containing anthrax were also mailed to two U.S. senators, Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy, and several media outlets such as ABC, NBC, and the National Enquirer. The attacks were an immediate wake-up call to the American public about the reality of terrorism and the importance of having a professionally trained team of first responders in the event of a catastrophic or natural disaster. As a result of the terrorist acts on U.S. soil the government decided to take a closer look at homeland security, efficiency of existing government agencies, and provide an answer to the nations need for safety.
