QUICK INTRO TO VI THE "VI" TEXT EDITOR UNIX machines have various text editors. The best known is "vi", but it can be somewhat difficult to use. Other editors are "pico" and "emacs". To create a new file, or to edit an existing file, just type vi FILENAME at the rohan prompt, where FILENAME is replaced by whatever filename you want your file to have. Vi has two modes -- "command mode" and "input mode" (typing mode). When vi starts, you will be in COMMAND MODE. TO GO FROM COMMAND MODE TO TYPING MODE: Hit the "a" or "i" key. TO GO FROM TYPING MODE TO COMMAND MODE: Hit the "ESC" (escape) key. IMPORTANT COMMANDS (WHEN YOU ARE IN COMMAND MODE ONLY!): a or i ---- switch to typing mode. (" i " inserts new text right where the cursor is now. " a " inserts new text right AFTER where the cursor is now.) x ---- delete the letter being highlighted by the cursor. dd ---- delete the entire line where the cursor is. ZZ
