What is the primary purpose of the essay? What characteristics of the essay correspond to this purpose? List examples. The primary purpose of this essay is persuasive. A claim is made in the essay - women are not inferior to men but should not be treated so. Support for this claim is offered in the essay. For example, if women do not “cultivate their understanding”, they are “made ridiculous and useless when women grow old and lose their outer beauty. A warrant is presented in the text. For instance, Wollstonecraft uses the warrant “meanwhile strength of body and mind are sacrificed to libertine notions of beauty, to the desire of establishing themselves, - the only way women can rise in the world, - by marriage”, which reflects the general social expectation for women to marry and nothing more, dependent on man. This warrant is also used as emotional appeal to persuade women audience to stand up for themselves. 2.
