Tong 1 Esaias Katie Sanders ENGL 1301 02/27/2009 Computer operating systems In this technological age, almost everyone has a computer. Since 2002 alone, over 1 billion computers have been sold worldwide. (Kanellos, Michael.) Behind all this hardware is the computer’s operating system, the magical platform of the computer. It helps to run the various computer applications simultaneously and manages your computer. The best computer operating system is the one that gives the user the least problems. The best computer operating system is a hard choice, as all the different computer operating systems have their own unique characteristics and specific uses. They have many common features as well as significant differences. When shopping for a computer operating system, the choices are generally one of the main three operating systems: Windows, Mac and Linux. In this choice sparks a question of curiosity - which one is the best operating system? To find out, we will look at both the pros and cons of the three computer operating systems and determine which is the best overall. The first operating system in this analysis is Windows. Besides, most computer software and programs are designed for Windows interface exclusively, which has contributed towards its popular usage. Therefore, it is most popular amongst computer gamers for its compatibility and as a home desktop operating system. Windows is also relatively more expensive compared to Linux but most versions are cheaper than Mac. (Shelly, Gary B.) For instance, all new versions of Windows 7 are less expensive than Mac OS X Tiger. The recent Windows 7 has many new features, and better performance compared to past Windows operating systems. The second operating system being compared is the Mac, as it is the second most commonly used operating system and it its usage is increasing rapidly throughout many parts of the world. ("Apple’s operating systems generate almost 1 visit out of 10 in Europe.") The Mac operating system has always been popular in universities and schools, especially with students or teachers not required to use Windows-specific software. Compared to Windows, it is not a
