Tong 1 Esaias Tong Katie Sanders English 1301 7/28/2011 Who am I? “Growing up Asian in America”, written by Kesaya E. Noda, has an expressive purpose with a pattern of classification to convey her identity struggle to self-define herself define herself , emphasizing her individuality in an autobiographical perspective to reveal the different layers of identity of the author. This is very wordy. The writer introduces the history of Japanese in America, Japanese culture and the many stereotypes of Japanese Americans to define herself through these different layers of identity. She recounts her childhood memories while growing up in America as an Japanese American, exploring these significant events in her life and the history of Japanese immigrants in America to summarize her identity by fitting the very pieces of her identity puzzle together, being racially Japanese, an American and a woman. Very wordy. Throughout the text “Growing Up Asian in America”, the expressive purpose is an important constituent of the way the author self-defines her identity as a Japanese-American. One element of expressive writing that is central to the essay is the author’s self-definition. The author conveys how she will define herself in different layers of identity in the quote: “How is one to know and define oneself? From the inside – within a context that is self defined, from a grounding in a community and a connection with culture and history that are comfortably accepted? Or from the outside – in terms of messages received from the media and people who are often ignorant? Even as an adult I can still see two sides of my face and past. In addition, you would have to use block quotation for a quote this long. This is an introduction to the struggle the author faces when trying to understand who she really is. This self-definition paves way for the next paragraph of self-definition when she directly states “I am racially Japanese” and other supporting paragraphs describing what her identity is. Another component of this essay that is characteristic of expressive writing is the integration of emotional responses. In the following quote, the writer criticizes the passive nature of her parents and grandparents, asking them repeatedly with an angry, emotional tone. “ ’Why
