Tong 1 Esaias Tong K. Sanders ENGL 1301 7/25/2011 Worksheet Analyzing Essays: Paper 6 & The C Test Read The Rights of Women by Mary Wollstonecraft on pg. 267 in PPP and then answer the following questions. 1. What is the primary purpose of the essay? What characteristics of the essay correspond to this purpose? List examples. The primary purpose of this essay is persuasive. A claim is made in the essay - women are not inferior to men but should not be treated so. Support for this claim is offered in the essay. For instance, Wollstonecraft uses the warrant “meanwhile strength of body and mind are sacrificed to libertine notions of beauty, to the desire of establishing themselves, - the only way women can rise in the world, - by marriage”, which supports the claim that women are simply treated inferior because they are socially expected to throw away ‘body and mind’ for marriage but women are not predisposed to be inferior. She also mentions the education of women has been “more attended to than formerly, yet they are still reckoned a frivolous sex, and ridiculed or pitied by the writers who endeavor by satire or instruction to improve them.“

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
