Chapter 14 Therapy CAUSES A. Mystical - Person viewed as different from and inferior to norm. - Deviated from norm deviant possessed by evil - First look for pastor Spiritual guidance Treatment - Sacrifice - Exorcism - Prayer - Torture Drive out evil spirit B. Medical (somatic) - Person viewed as not inferior. Person not the cause but rather the victim of emotional problem. Person is saved, modern medicine has gotten better. Employ biological therapies Drugs - Mental illness humane treatment(compassionate) somatic/physical problem use of pharmaceuticals transquilizers/antidepressants

Problems of Drugs - Changes in psychological behavior needs therapy - Prescription abuse by physician - Should not be the sole cure - Drug prescription is biased, many physicians are sexist, females have higher chance of drug recommendations over therapy - Drug levels are not adjusted to the individual, not personally tailored - Should be the last resort Shock Therapy - Electro-Convulsive Shock - Now accompanied by muscle relaxants and less than a dozen mild shocks only Why does it work? -
