EXECUT I V E SU M MARY
UTeach Outreach is a program at the University of Texas at Austin that began in
1997. The program was designed to bring University undergraduates who would like to
become seconday teachers to instruct Ausitn Independent School District elementary
s tudents (website).
The UTeach Outreach programs hosts a number of events throughout each semester.
L ast Spring was the fi rst semester they hosted an event called Science Olympics. The
p urpose of Science Olympics is to go to elementary schools and prepare 5th g raders for end
of year examinations (TAKS). This event takes place for two weeks during the school day.
A lthough a successful event, after speaking with the coordinator of the event we saw that
t heir primary obstacle was volunteer recruiting.
Science Olympics requires 52 classrooms and 260 volunteers. We believe UTeach
O utreach has had difficulty recruiting volunteers due to their ineffective recruit ing
methods. Although they have reached out to other volunteer organizations such as
f raternities, sororites and honor organizations that require volunteer hours their main
t arget has been the School of Natural Science because their program focuses on science. At
t he moment UTeach Outreach has only one volunteer coordinator who is responsible for
f inding the hundreds volunteers needed for the events. The student employees are
r eluctant to find volunteers because they wouldn’t be getting paid , stressing the very limit
budget of the organization. names
We propose that they should put more emphasis in recruiting toward other schools
for example, the School of Education, not just the School of Natural Sciences. Another
solution would be for the students employees to be required a certain number of volunteer
hours per semester, since this is a volunteer organization. We will go more into detail about
U Teach Outreach problems and potential solutions for this organization in a future
p resentation. ...
