Unformatted text preview: Scientific Notation A number in scientific notation is of the form a x 10 n where 1< a<10 n is the number of places it took to move the decimal to get the number a between 1 and 10. If you move the decimal to the left, n is positive. If you move to the right, n is negative. I tell students if you start with a number that is not 0. something, you have a positive exponent. If you have 0. something, you have a negative exponent. Examples: Place the following numbers into scientific notation. 1. 1,230,000 2. 8,708,000,000 3. 0.7345 4. 0.0003201 Answers: 1. We need to move the decimal to make this number between 1 and 10. So we move it to 1.23 and now we count how many places we moved it. We moved it six places so our answer is 1.23 x 10 6 or 1.23*10 6 2. We need to move this one as well to make this between 1 and 10. We have 8.708. Some are tempted 2....
